School of Surveying and Mapping

The School of Surveying of Mapping was founded in 1951. It was developed from the Division of Surviving of Shandong Hongshan Coal School. In 1974, it was merged into Huainan Coal Mine Industrial College conducting the technicalsecondary education. In 1990, it started to offer Engineering Surveying program for associate degree. Later on, the School was approved to set up the undergraduate program “Surviving and Mapping Engineering” and “Geographic Information System (GIS)” respectively in1999 and 2004. Besides, the master’s program “Geodetics and Survey Engineering” was set up in 2003, “Cartography and Geographic Information Engineering” in 2006 and Engineering Master’s program of “Surveying and Mapping Engineering” in 2009. In 2010, it was separated from the School of Earth and Environment. In 2011, the School of Surveying and Mapping began to enroll undergraduate students of Remote Sensing Science and Technology Program, and Navigation Engineering Program in 2017. In the same year, Graphics Science and Technology was permitted as the first-level discipline authorized to offer masters degrees.

Currently, the School is composed of the Department of Surveying and Mapping Engineering and the Department of Geographical Information Engineering, involving 4 undergraduate programs, Surveying and Mapping Engineering, Navigation Engineering, Geographical Information Science, and Remote Sensing Science and Technology. Each year in average the School has 40 master graduates and 240 undergraduates. The employment rate is above 95%. The current enrollment is approximately 960 undergraduates and 100 undergraduates. The total number of faculty and staff is 45, including 3 full-professors, 13 associate professors, 2 doctoral supervisors, and 14 master’s supervisors.

In the past five years, the School of Surveying and Mapping has undertaken 11programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and authored more than 300 academic papers. It has the Coal Industry Engineering Research Center for the Collaborative Monitoring of Mine Environment and Disaster, accredited byChina National Coal Association (CNCA); three university-level research institutes, including Institute of Land Surveying and Spatial Information, Institute of Navigation and Positioning Technology and Application, and Institute of Mining Subsidence and Land Reclamation. The School’s scientific research has formed its distinct characteristics in fields of GNSS navigation and positioning technology, collaborative monitoring of mine environment and disasters, mining subsidence and land reclamation, etc.

The surveying science and technology experimental teaching center of the School consists of surveying and mapping basic laboratory, engineering surveying laboratory, navigation and positioning laboratory, geographic information system laboratory, remote sensing technology and application laboratory, and land reclamation laboratory. The Specialty “Surveying and Mapping Engineering” has acquired theChina Engineering Education Accreditation in 2014, and passed the on-site inspection of Experts Group from China Engineering Education Accreditation Association in 2017. Besides, the School of Surveying and Mapping services as the director of theColleges and Universities Water Conservancy and Mapping Cooperation Committee of Anhui Province.

The School has conductedactive and wide communication and collaboration with many universities, organizations, associations and institutes at home and abroad, including the International Society of Mine Surveying, theMine Surveying Committee of China Coal Association, the Mine Surveying Committee of China Surveying and Mapping Association, Anhui Provincial Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, Wuhan University, China University of Mining and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Osnabrueck University of Applied Sciences, Germany, AGH University of Science and Technology, Poland, Irkutsk University, Russia. A lot of well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad have been to invited give lectures. Currently, under the School’s supports, many faculty members have gone to the United States, Germany, Australia, Russia, South Korea, Japan and other countries serving as visiting scholars. Besides, the School has successfully held the 2017 International Mine Measurement Academic Forum and organized the Chinese-German College Students Summer School.
