On the morning of November 20, students and teachers gathered in theShungeng Hall with great expectation and enthusiasm. Academician Chen Xiaoping of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was invited to give a report on the theme of “My Road to Medicine”, sharing his medical experience and academic achievements with students and teachers. Academician Yuan Liang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of the university, presided over the report and delivered a speech.

    The report

    Chen Xiaoping

Academician Chen Xiaoping, starting from the beginning of his medical experience, shared several stories about his experience as an informal rural doctor, his medical (undergraduate) education and his internship in Huainan, helping inspire the students to understand the truth of “Misfortune might be a blessing in disguise” and “behind every seemingly bad thing may be a new opportunity. Students should not give up just because of temporary failure.” When sharing the innovative achievements in the field of hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, academician Chen clearly demonstrated the “Chen’s” surgical method through an animated video, which is applied to liver cancer resection, liver transplantation, hepatoportal bile duct cancer surgery and pancreatic intestinal surgery. He is highly recognized by the international circle as ‘the leader of reform and innovation in the treatment of hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases’, and made significant contributions to the internationalization of Chinese hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.

While achieving one achievement after another, academician Chen Xiaoping never stops writing books, teaching and educating students, and cultivating medical talents. At the end of the report, he encouraged young students with three mottoes: don't be proud of your achievements in your future medical career; learn to be tolerant and have an open mind; persist in learning, and live and learn.

After the report, he answered several questions from teachers and students.

Yuan Liang presided over the report and delivered a speech

Yuan Liang pointed out when presiding over the presentation that the report of academician Chen Xiaoping was rich in content, and many seemingly ordinary stories were told, but they were exciting and inspiring for everyone. Chen Xiaoping grew from aninformal rural doctor to a famous scientist, showing his spirit of grasping opportunities, persevering in pursuit, and constantly challenging difficult problems in the field of surgery. In his practical work, he has demonstrated the spirit of Chinese scientists by devoting himself to his work, relieving patients’ pain, and exploring scientific and technological innovations without considering personal fame and fortune, achieving fruitful results and gaining worldwide recognition. From treating patients to writing books and educating people, he never forgetshis original aspiration of being a doctor and cultivating medical talents for the country. Yuan hoped that the students would draw strengths from Academician Chen's report, be firm in their goals and more confident, and become an excellent medical talent by sticking to their original aspirations and working hard in the future.

After the report, Academician Chen Xiaoping paid a visit to Mr. Gu Xianzhao, who was his internship supervisor and over 80 years old, to thank him for his guidance and education.

Representatives from the First Affiliated Hospital of AUST, Natural Science Division and the School of Medicine listened to the report.
